Migrating ICGN onto Drupal 10 and a resilient AWS platform

ICGN — the International Corporate Governance Network — connects investors, companies and policymakers worldwide around effective corporate governance and investor stewardship, through its policy work, global events programme and education courses. We migrated their site to Drupal 10 on a newly architected AWS platform built to stay reliable for a global membership.

The challenge & approach

A proper migration, not a lift-and-shift

ICGN serves a global network of investors, companies and policymakers through events, policy publications, member resources and education courses — all of which depend on a site that's fast and available around the clock across time zones. The existing platform needed to move onto Drupal 10, which made this the moment to fix the underlying architecture properly rather than carry the same limitations onto a newer CMS version.

  • Ran an architecture review of the existing setup and produced a high-level design for the target AWS platform, followed by a low-level design covering instance sizing, database configuration and failover behaviour.
  • Migrated the site to Drupal 10, validating content, member data and every custom feature against the new codebase before cutover.
  • Rebuilt hosting on load-balanced AWS servers behind an application tier, with the database moved onto RDS with a read replica for resilience and reporting.
  • Put AWS WAF in front of the platform for application-layer protection, alongside our standard Drupal security patching and monitoring.

The results

99.99% uptime, sub-2s load times

  • 99.99% uptime on the new platform, serving ICGN's global membership around the clock.
  • Page load times down to under 2 seconds.
  • A clean move to Drupal 10 with no loss of content, member data or functionality.
  • AWS WAF and RDS failover now in place, reducing both security and infrastructure risk going forward.
