Contentful's new AI content actions — what it means for editorial workflows
Contentful now ships native AI content actions in the entry editor — rewrite, summarise, translate and generate alt text. Here's what's genuinely useful and what needs guardrails first.
Contentful has added AI content actions directly into the entry editor — rewrite tone, summarise long-form fields, translate across configured locales, and generate alt text from an uploaded asset, all without leaving the entry. It's built on the App Framework, so the actions are extensible rather than fixed.
What's new
- AI actions available directly on rich text and short text fields in the entry editor
- App Framework hooks so custom actions can be defined against your own content model and prompts
- Content-model-aware suggestions — actions respect field validations and reference relationships rather than ignoring them
- Locale-aware translation that fills configured locale fields directly, not a separate export step
What this means for editorial teams
For teams publishing across multiple locales or with a high volume of routine content — product descriptions, listing summaries, alt text at scale — this removes a lot of mechanical work. Alt text generation in particular is a genuine accessibility win for teams that have historically left it blank under deadline pressure.
It is not a replacement for editorial judgement. Generated copy needs the same review pass a junior writer's draft would get, and brand voice consistency depends entirely on how well the prompts are configured — the default actions are a starting point, not a finished voice.
What to configure before turning this on
The teams getting good results have done three things first: defined custom prompts that reflect actual brand voice guidelines rather than relying on generic defaults, restricted which roles can trigger AI actions on published (versus draft) content, and — critically — made sure the underlying content model is clean enough that the AI isn't inheriting years of inconsistent field usage.
AI content actions amplify whatever content model sits underneath them — clean or otherwise. We run content modelling workshops before a rollout like this so the AI has something coherent to work with.
